BRUNO BILLIO

This installation consists in a 24-foot black and yellow sculpture and a transformation of the exterior and the interior of the building using The Canadian Stage Company's signature colour “yellow” in the mediums of light and yellow stripes. BRUNO BILLIO has exhibited in Milan, London, Miami, New York and Los Angeles.

De Luca Fine Art | Gallery is currently exhibiting “Stacked = Retrospect” a retrospective of over 15 years of works by BRUNO BILLIO. The show will run from March 10^th to March 31^st, 2011.

shows by Sieni, Simone and Sagna

La natura delle cose.

The stylistic refinement of Virgilio Sieni, the tragic depth of Spiro Scimone, and the suggestive and the talents of Caterina Sagna, for an in-depth look at Italian contemporary theatre and dance, while also offering a taste of Toronto’s variegated multiculturalism. This is the objective Canadian Stage has set for itself, which from March 15 to 26 will present at Berkeley Street Theatre, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute, “Spotlight on Italy”, an international theatre festival centred completely on Italy, both on and off the stage.
“‘Spotlight’ was conceived to reflect on the artistic and cultural diversity of Toronto,” says Matthew Jocelyn, Artistic and General Director of Canadian Stage. “We’re honoured to bring these artists to Canada – who with their art and talent will contribute to make the festival period unique.” Two weeks during which Berkeley Street Theatre will be completely transformed into an Italian pavilion where the public will not only get first opportunity to watch shows by Sieni, Simone, and Sagna, but also to enjoy a series of satellite events that fully reflect Italianità, from contemporary art and music, to cuisine and fashion.
Between shows in fact, audiences will be able to enjoy a glass of wine and a carefully planned selection of antipasti while strolling through installations by artist BRUNO BILLIO who took care of set-up and lighting.
Among music groups performing will be Domenic Mancuso’s ensemble, – he won a Juno last year – jazz guitarist David Occhipinti, the Antonio Ciacca Trio, best bass-player award-winner Roberto Occhipinti, Michael Occhipinti with his Sicilian Jazz Project, Vesuvius Ensemble with its repertoire of Neapolitan Baroque music, and Marco Calliari from Montreal. The fashion show – another expression of “Made in Italy” – will feature Versace and Carlucci, along with various other events each evening.
Italy is the first country to be highlighted by Canadian Stage, but the theatre company’s idea is to organize a biennial festival that displays the best of contemporary culture from communities that make up the variegated Toronto mosaic.

Featured Artist: BRUNO BILLIO

BILLIO is a sculptor and instillation artist. His work has be exhibited internationally and involves a magical transformation of everyday objects that signify a deeper meaning while remaining, well…everyday. He customized his parents 1950’s luggage and turned them into light sources by drilling holes in the case bodies and installing light bulbs. He turned them into a galaxy in a box on the move. They’ve become beacons in the second floor hallway of the Gladstone Hotel, Toronto Canada – as if they’ve finally arrived. In many of his works, BILLIO stacks things to create a sculpture unto itself. A vase sits precariously on a pile of books that are stacked on a column. Conventional items are used in unconventional ways to create new life.

“Adopted Home, A History in Progress”

This is the story of COSTI and the people in search of a new home in a stranger society. Capturing moments of Canadian Sociological History as it unfolds before our eyes.

From the Beginning, this film recounts the origins of a grass-roots organization (COSTI) and illustrates its evolution into a vital, thriving centre for immigrants.

It illustrates when fifty years ago the Italian Immigrant Aid Society, frequently met newly arrived immigrants at Union Station in downtown Toronto before it became part of COSTI...

COSTI's growth can be viewed through the Corvetti Education Centre - today one of the organization's largest and busiest locations. At this location, we enter one of the English (as a Second Language) classrooms and hear the din of the students' collective voices, choir-like in response to their teachers' instructions. The dozen or more classrooms are filled with people from all over the world, all there with the same common goal of learning English. For many, once in Canada, language is the biggest barrier and obstacle to overcome after emigrating. Learning English at COSTI's Education Centre is a vital, first step for them to begin a transition into Canadian life. A glimpse into one of these classrooms immediately reveals a cross-section of the city's varied cultural makeup. Against the backdrop of these classrooms, a virtual microcosm of Toronto - both students and teachers (may be a student-turned teacher) are interviewed. A "the Centre for Internationally Trained Professionals", newcomers recount their story and the frustration at coming to a new country and no longer having their job skills recognized. They explain how after discovering COSTI's Centre for Internationally Trained Professionals, the CITPT program helped them to re-gain the self-confidence they needed to begin again.

COSTI's Reception Centre, established in 1989, is a 100-bed residence for government- sponsored refugees, and is the only one of its kind in Canada. This transitional "home" is dedicated to offering full settlement services to refugee families, many of whom have experienced great suffering at the hands of war and political persecution. The residents recount their experience from back intheir country until coming to Canada...

For Mary Gharwal many years have passed since she first passed through the Centre's doors as a refugee. Today, she is the director. She tells of the work she carries out every day. Mary now wants to "give back" to the community...

This documentary also highlights other community-based organizations, which "use" COSTI as a model to duplicate their organization's services. The African-Canadian community, and the Punjabi-Canadian community are an example of how groups sought COSTI's guidance to establish its own independent organization...

Representatives of other organizations, partners of COSTI, talk about the collective ongoing work in progress to always better Canada's public policy in order to embrace and accommodate the needs and changes that constantly occur within our society.

La Festa is a brilliant examination of the family microcosm. Set in a small, abstract kitchen while preparing for a party, a father, mother, and son act out one day — amongst many — in a cruel but delightfully funny game of reciprocal intolerance.

A juried exhibition featuring works in black and white.

The exhibit is inspired by Truman Capote’s 1966, Black and White Ball, held at the Grand Ballroom of New York City's Plaza Hotel.  It was considered to be "the most posh event, not just of the year, but also of the decade, and maybe even the century" To read more go to:  http://www.propellerctr.com/

My Left Hand was originally exhibited in 1997 at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery and at the National Museum of Photography in Brescia, Italy. Both exhibitions displayed 30, 4x5 inch contact prints from instant Polaroid negatives. These Polaroids were tests for shooting with large format camera, using my 8 x 10 inch negatives. Only three enlargements were produced. They are the only limited editions prints created from the 8 x 10 series. 

"The series was initially conceived through my inspiration to pursue three-dimensional sculptural forms with photography. The ability to contort my hands was inherited from my great grandfather, a circus contortionist in Chicago. The twisted hand seemed perfect for this sculptural exploration”.~ Greg Holman

“My Left Hand” photographs are limited edition archival silver bromide prints created in 2001 for Greg Holman's ten-year retrospective titled “Decade”.

TORONTO - È stato presentato giovedì sera al Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP di Bay street il libro Made in Canada, the Italian Way: The Next Generation promosso dalla Camera di Commercio Italiana in Ontario (Icco). Il libro raccoglie le interviste realizzate a 34 giovani professionisti italo-canadesi, che hanno già raggiunto livelli di esperienza in settori come quello degli affari, dell’arte, scienza e scultura.
«Sfogliando questo libro si può subito capire - ha spiegato l’executive director dell’Icco Corrado Paina al Corriere Canadese - che questi ragazzi hanno già raggiunto una esperienza di vita e un successo che sono incredibili, soprattutto alla loro età». Questo, secondo Paina, è un dato molto importante per l’intera comunità italiana: «Il fatto che vi siano giovani di tale successo permette che avvengano cambiamenti radicali all’interno della comunità italo-canadese - continua il direttore - La loro maturità è infatti un elemento fondamentale per far si che finalmente le comunità si compatti e riesca a compiere quelle scelte che ne proteggeranno l’esistenza». I 34 ritratti pubblicati sulle pagine di Made in Canada, the Italian Way: The Next Generation rappresentano quindi una ventata di freschezza per una realtà, quella italo-canadese, che necessita di un’apertura verso l’esterno pur mantenendo la propria identità.
Circa 300 persone hanno preso parte all’evento di giovedì sera, che ha celebrato non solo il libro, ma una generazione intera. «È stato un evento molto bello - conclude Paina - soprattutto perché tutti i partecipanti hanno acquistato una copia del libro. Questo permetterà di diffondere ancora di più le storie di eccellenti successi di questi giovani italo-canadesi».

TORONTO - It was presented Thursday night at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP in Bay Street's book Made in Canada, the Italian Way: The Next Generation promoted by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Ontario (ICCO). The book collects interviews with 34 young Italian-Canadian professionals who have already reached a level of expertise in areas such as business, art, science and sculpture.
"Leafing through this book you can immediately understand - said the ICC executive director Corrado Paina the Canadian Courier - these guys have already achieved a lifetime experience and success that are incredible, especially at their age." This, according to Paina is a very important for the entire Italian community: "The fact that there are young for such success that allows radical changes occur in the Italian-Canadian community - continues the director - The maturity is in fact key to ensure that communities are compact and finally manages to make those choices that will protect our lives ". The 34 portraits published in the pages of "Made in Canada, the Italian Way: The Next Generation represent a breath of fresh air for a fact that Italian-Canadian, which requires an opening to the outside while retaining their identity.
About 300 people attended the event on Thursday evening, which celebrated not only the book, but a whole generation. "It was a very nice event - concluded Pain - mainly because all the participants have acquired a copy of the book. This will spread even more stories of outstanding achievements of these young Italian-Canadians. "
