OPENING NIGHT SpotLight.Italy at The Canadian Stage Company

The Berkeley Street Theatre complex was transformed into an Italian salon where audiences can see four groundbreaking Italian contemporary dance and theatre productions, along with a series of free events featuring Italian fashion, music, food and art that will create a festival atmosphere. Between performances, guests can relax over Italian antipasti and a glass of wine in the Berkeley lobby while enjoying live music, contemporary light installations by BRUNO BILLIO and fashions by Versace and Carlucci, with different events taking place each night.

"LA NATURA DELLE COSE"
LA NATURA DELLE COSE
Choreography by Virgilio Sieni, collaboration on dramaturgical writing and translations Giorgio Agamben, with Ramona Caia, Massimiliano Barachini, Jacopo Jenna, Csaba Molnar, Daniele Ninarello.
Inspired by Lucretius’ ancient Roman text On the Nature of the Universe, this compelling dance theatre piece was conceived and choreographed to examine and explore the idea of the origin of things, vacuousness and nothingness.

Dominic Mancuso
Tuesday, March 15, 8:30-10:30 pm

2010 Juno Award winner for "World Music Album of the Year" and 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award winner for "World Solo Artist of the Year" Dominic Mancuso weaves in the warmth and passion of Sicilian folk sensibility, with the sliding quarter notes of the myriad sounds of the Mediterranean rim, with the vibrant elasticity of the idiom of soul and the wild swing of jazz and Romani freedom. Mancuso is an artist that transcends cultures and borders making old world new.

Everyday: Internationally acclaimed Italian artist BRUNO BILLIO uses light to transform the Canadian Stage Company's Berkeley location for Spotlight on Italy. SPOTLIGHT.ITALY 10.11 marks the first year of our international Spotlight series, which will see the entire Berkeley complex transformed into a celebration of the groundbreaking contemporary theatre and culture of a particular foreign country.

BASSO OSTINATO

Choreography by Caterina Sagna, Text by Roberto Fratini Serafide, with Alessandro Bernardeschi, Antonio Montanile, Mauro Paccagnella.
Following an evening meal, three men converse with words, fragments, and gestures in this criticism of contemporary human efforts to mask decay and death under virtuosic form.
March 22-26, 2011 Berkeley Downstairs

LA FESTA

Text by Spiro Scimone, Directed by Gianfelice Imparato, with Francesco Sframeli, Spiro Scimone, Gianluca Casali.
La Festa is a brilliant examination of the family microcosm. Set in a small, abstract kitchen while preparing for a party, a father, mother, and son act out one day — amongst many — in a cruel but delightfully funny game of reciprocal intolerance.
