SpotLight.Italy Schedule at the Canadian Stage Company

The Canadian Stage with the assistance of the De Luca Fine Art | Gallery and Istituto Italiano di Cultura, in honour of the 150th anniversary of the reunification of Italy, is proud to present  SPOTLIGHT.ITALY, running March 15 - 26, 2011. This two-week festival features productions by innovative Italian companies and an abundance of artistic events, classes and experiences that honour modern Italian culture and art.

A BRUNO BILLIO and Jade Rude collaboration.
SPOTLIGHT ON ART
Everyday: Internationally acclaimed Italian artist BRUNO BILLIO uses light to transform the Canadian Stage Company's Berkeley location. Billio's centrepiece will be an 18' tall Black and Yellow Tower.

SPOTLIGHT.ITALY 10.11 marks the first year of our international Spotlight series, which will see the entire Berkeley complex transformed into a celebration of the groundbreaking contemporary theatre and culture of a particular foreign country.
LA NATURA DELLE COSE
Choreography by Virgilio Sieni, collaboration on dramaturgical writing and translations Giorgio Agamben, with Ramona Caia, Massimiliano Barachini, Jacopo Jenna, Csaba Molnar, Daniele Ninarello.
Inspired by Lucretius’ ancient Roman text On the Nature of the Universe, this compelling dance theatre piece was conceived and choreographed to examine and explore the idea of the origin of things, vacuousness and nothingness.
March 15-19, 2011 Berkeley Downstairs

NUNZIO

Text by Spiro Scimone, Directed by Carlo Cecchi, with Francesco Sframeli and Spiro Scimone.
A dialogue takes place between an ailing man who is happy merely to “wait and see” and his tough nomadic hero who is soft at heart – both alone in the world and partners in misfortune.
March 15-19, 2011 Berkeley Upstairs

BASSO OSTINATO

Choreography by Caterina Sagna, Text by Roberto Fratini Serafide, with Alessandro Bernardeschi, Antonio Montanile, Mauro Paccagnella.
Following an evening meal, three men converse with words, fragments, and gestures in this criticism of contemporary human efforts to mask decay and death under virtuosic form.
March 22-26, 2011 Berkeley Downstairs

LA FESTA

Text by Spiro Scimone, Directed by Gianfelice Imparato, with Francesco Sframeli, Spiro Scimone, Gianluca Casali.
La Festa is a brilliant examination of the family microcosm. Set in a small, abstract kitchen while preparing for a party, a father, mother, and son act out one day — amongst many — in a cruel but delightfully funny game of reciprocal intolerance.
March 22-26, 2011 Berkeley Upstairs

Greg Holman, "My Left Hand"

De Luca Fine Art's own Greg Holman "My Left Hand" at Propeller Centre For The Visual Arts.

Opening Reception:
Thurs. Feb 17, 7 - 10 p.m.

Black & White Ball

February 16 - 27, 2011

A juried exhibition featuring works in black and white.

The exhibit is inspired by Truman Capote’s 1966, Black and White Ball, held at the Grand Ballroom of New York City's Plaza Hotel.  It was considered to be "the most posh event, not just of the year, but also of the decade, and maybe even the century" To read more go to:  http://www.propellerctr.com/

My Left Hand was originally exhibited in 1997 at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery and at the National Museum of Photography in Brescia, Italy. Both exhibitions displayed 30, 4x5 inch contact prints from instant Polaroid negatives. These Polaroids were tests for shooting with large format camera, using my 8 x 10 inch negatives. Only three enlargements were produced. They are the only limited editions prints created from the 8 x 10 series.

"The series was initially conceived through my inspiration to pursue three-dimensional sculptural forms with photography. The ability to contort my hands was inherited from my great grandfather, a circus contortionist in Chicago. The twisted hand seemed perfect for this sculptural exploration”.~ Greg Holman

“My Left Hand” photographs are limited edition archival silver bromide prints created in 2001 for Greg Holman's ten-year retrospective titled “Decade”.

Made In Canada: The Italian Way, The Next Generation

The Italian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario (ICCO) is pleased to announce the launch of Made in Canada, the Italian Way: The Next Generation at the Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP offices on Thursday, January 27, 2011.

The book will overview how they are successfully managing the businesses their forefathers founded. In addition, the book will also present their innovation and creativity in establishing new enterprises, new strategies, and in achieving success in fields that are not traditionally identified as common within their community.

ICCO strongly believes in this project and is confident this latest effort will match the success of its previous publications, Made in Canada: The Italian Way and Celebration, which showcased respectively successful stories of Italian-Canadian entrepreneurs and of Italian-Canadian women and their importance for the diversity of our community.
