Italian artist Enzo Maio’s paintings are officially on exhibit for the first time in Canada, at the De Luca Fine Art | Gallery in downtown Toronto.
Corrado De Luca, the director and curator of the De Luca Fine Art | Gallery, is pleased to be exhibiting Maio’s paper and canvas paintings.
De Luca, who grew up in the art business, is very passionate about bringing Italian artists to the attention of Canadian art lovers here in Toronto. It’s been one of his mandates for the more than four years that he has operated his gallery.
In addition to highlighting the works of contemporary Italian artists, (both established and upcoming) De Luca has access to historical artists as well, and is now trying to include the works of a few artists who originate from different countries in Europe.
De Luca is also interested in creating a forum for Canadian artists to share their works on an international level.
“[The] goal of [the] gallery [is] to contribute to [the] multiculturalization of Toronto’s art scene,” says De Luca. “I would like to make the Canadian artists grow internationally.”
De Luca plans on bringing Canadian artists to Italy so that they can have their work exhibited in Italian art galleries, as this will help to strengthen the bridge that the De Luca Fine Art | Gallery works to create between the artistic scenes of Italy and Canada.
For now, however, De Luca is happy to have his gallery present the works of Enzo Maio.
On Thursday May 20 the De Luca Fine Art | Gallery  officially welcomed Maio’s work with an exhibition entitled “Landscapes- Work on Canvas and Paper,” where a wide range of attendees, including collectors and artists had the chance to see varioius works by Maio, who currently lives and works in Vercelli, Italy.
“This exhibition is a collection of recent work combined with previous work to give the audience an overlook of Maio’s work,” says De Luca.
De Luca points out that Maio’s past works tend to be on the darker side with dark greens and grey colours. However, Maio’s more recent work is experimental —there are more bright colours combined with earthy tones.
Maio is an artist who deals with landscapes of Novara (his native land), says De Luca. Some of the landscape scenes depict hills and countrysides.
“Maio’s paintings are very elegant paintings — timeless work — yet simple,” De Luca explains.
In order to understand Maio’s work, however, one must also understand his artistic style. Maio’s work is described as “informal naturalism,” which means the artist is painting reality. In this case Maio paints landscapes but infused within the painting is the feeling that the artist has towards their surroundings.
“Maio is painting his own state — the feeling —as he is painting the landscape,” said De Luca.
What De Luca particularly likes about Maio’s work is the difference between both forms that he uses.
For example, on paper Maio’s work moves more towards abstraction. It looks like he uses a watercolour technique, but instead you see pencil marks from the sketches, and after painting he scratches the paint off when it is about to dry and this scratching technique creates the abstract because Maio is infusing emotion.
Maio’s work on canvas combines a material component, and De Luca describes it as seeing the scraps from sharpening a pencil scattered on top of the painting.
According to De Luca, essentially, all these techniques represent Maio’s not wanting “to steer away from his own interior.”

In a series of portraits from the famous to the less known, Rino Noto examines the convergence of light and shadow to produce the expression of the human spirit.

With a reverential depth, he violates the usual directives of light and focus.

Prominence is reserved for tiny slivers of light that reveal the spirit with an unsuspected richness.

His approach, exposing each subject as a burning flame or a quiet flicker, every soul at its heart a glowing ember in the enduring fire of all humanity.

The portraits include: Professor / Author Umberto Eco, Actor Tony Nardi, Director / Writer - Jerry Ciccoritti, Singer / Songwriter Murray McLauchlan, Musician Jeff Martin, Artist Shelley Adler.

Tribal Art

Corrado De Luca
Corrado De Luca, owner of De Luca Fine Art | Gallery tours William Jamieson's 6,500 square foot one bedroom unit in an exclusive part of downtown Toronto. Bill uses most of his space to display real mummies, authentic shrunken heads and his collection primitive and tribal art.

You may have heard of Torontonian Bill Jamieson's, recently discovered acquisition of the mummy of Pharaoh Ramses I,  in a collection he purchased from a defunct museum in Niagara Falls, Ontario in the 19th century. The pharaoh was later repatriated to Egypt.

Bill is an Historian, ethnologist, museologist, ancient and tribal art dealer and collector. Bill’s interests evolve around the forgotten cultures and customs of the South Pacific, Indonesian, African, South and North American Indians, and Egyptian. His fascination with artifacts from these cultures, as well as oddities and curiosities from around the globe, especially objects of the Macabre.

Art-Hopping: Power Plant, Gallery TPW, De Luca Fine Art | Gallery

2007_11_28photorama.jpgThis weekend, resist the urge to do the same old bar hop and try a more sophisticated means of indulging your party ADD: the art show hop. Okay, so we just invented that term, but the city does have three rad art happenings going on almost simultaneously this Friday, November 30. And we say, why choose?
To start your adventure, knock back a whiskey for warmth and head down to the Harbourfront, where the Power Plant is holding an opening reception for its winter 2007–08 program, featuring three solo exhibitions. "Steven Shearer," an eponymous retrospective of the Vancouver artist’s work, is filled with nostalgic, archivist, multimedia explorations of male adolescence and heavy metal (think of it as a visual Fargo Rock City). Toronto’s Stephen Andrews is presenting "Cartoon," a 45-second crayon-on-mylar animation—intended to approximate the CYMK dot-matrix of a newspaper photo—that juxtaposes a car commercial deemed too violet for television with images of the Iraq war. Finally, Los Angeles-based Andrea Bowen’s "The Weight of Relevance" is timed to open on World AIDS Day and examines the creation—and creators—of the world's largest piece of folk art, the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The public reception starts at 7 pm and is free to the public; exhibitions will be on display from December 1, 2007 through February 10, 2008.
Next, take the 501 to Ossington: Gallery TPW's 21st annual Photorama features provocative, forward-thinking work by scores of contemporary artists, from Stephen Andrews (again) to Balint Zsako. With most pieces priced under $600, it's the perfect place to do some early shopping for the art lovers on your holiday list (or snag a guilt-free gift to yourself). Bonus: the event, which runs from 6 to 9 p.m., is sponsored by Grolsch, meaning (cross your fingers) lots of free beer. And if not? Make sure you leave yourself time to swing by the newborn Baby Huey (70 Ossington) for a $3.50 pint of PBR before heading to your third and final destination...
...De Luca Fine Art | Gallery (1153 Queen Street West, Unit 203) presents "Chilling the Warm Heart of the Earth", a display of new works on paper by Juno Youn, as well as a host of local collaborators. The 7-10 p.m. opening reception is 19+ and guest list only; RSVP to contact@delucafineart.com. Show runs through December 15th, but note that the gallery operates by appointment only.
Now, having drunk your fill of art, you'll find yourself across from more literal drinking opportunities on Queen West's hipster strip: The Gladstone, Beaver, Beaconsfield, Drake... same old bar hop? Yeah, whatever. We'll see you there.

Announcement from the Italian Cultural Institute

 * NOT FOR PRINT USE * See "The Institute>press" page - Logo of the Italian Cultural Institutes: half of the sculpture "sfera grande" by Pomodoro on red backgroundCorrado De Luca announces the opening of De Luca Fine Art | Gallery on Thursday, May 4, with a reception from 5:30 pm to 9:00 PM at 1153 Queen Street West, Unit 203, inside the Woolfitt building, across the street from the Drake Hotel.

OPENING DE LUCA FINE ART GALLERY
Corrado De Luca is both filmmaker and art dealer: His filmography includes: Interview with the Mythfish, Stoned (Milan International Short Film Festival), the documentary films; ParkdAlien (BRAVO!), Barbers (Omni Television). For ten years Corrado has been promoting his father and other established Italian contemporary artists in Canada by curating exhibitions in collaboration with several galleries in Toronto such as Joseph D. Carrier, Odon Wagner, Drabinsky and Mittica. More recently he has hosted receptions in his studio which led to the opening of De Luca Fine Art | Gallery. The inaugural exhibition features new work by Corrado’s father, Giuseppe De Luca, one of the most expressively modern traditionalist painters in Italy today. His innovative methods have shattered conventional impressionistic techniques with powerful results. His paintings remain a testament to a profound consideration for felt emotions and tangible experience. De Luca Fine Art | Gallery will be a by-appointment-only atelier, or “salotto”, with public receptions that will offer collectors the opportunity to acquire work by some of the finest artists in Italy today, including Pedretti, Cassinari, Ossola, Sesia, Crippa, Maio, Rognoni, Martinelli and Calia, as well as emerging artists Emanuele Gregolin, Mauro Bordin and Claudio Rubino. De Luca Fine Art | Gallery will also feature Italian Canadian artists.
