Everyone here at the ARCHEO restaurant located in the heart of Historic Distillery District, joined in with millions of people around the world this evening in the collective effort to battle climate change and raise environmental awareness.

The restaurant is a perfect balance of contemporary style and historic tradition, with it's high ceilings, concrete floors, exposed brick walls, large open-concept room and the reclaimed timber bar and tables was a perfect setting when the lights switched-off here in Toronto at 8:30 p.m. for an hour as a celebration of the fourth annual Earth Hour in Canada. 

People at ARCHEO, across the city and around world from all walks of life came together in celebration of EARTH HOUR that was started five ears ago in Australia to raise awareness and aid in the international climate change.

In honour of the 150th anniversary of the reunification of Italy, Canadian Stage hosted Spotlight.Italy, that ran from March 15 - 26, 2011. This two-week festival featured productions by innovative Italian companies and an abundance of artistic events, classes and experiences that honour modern Italian culture and art. Including Internationally acclaimed Italian artist BRUNO BILLIO who used light to transform the Canadian Stage Company's Berkeley location for Spotlight on Italy. At once an installation artist, a sculptor, and a designer, BILLIO's centrepiece was an 18' tall Black and Yellow Tower.

Toronto, March 22rd, 2011 – De Luca Fine Art | Gallery presents “MADE IN MONTREAL En considérant le monde différent”, a solo exhibition of International artist Juno Youn. Exhibition Duration: April 9^th to April 30^th, 2011. De Luca Fine Art | Gallery is hosting the Opening Reception: Saturday, April 9^th, 2011, from 6 pm to 9:30 pm. 

Juno Youn delves once again into his familiar visual journey, which successfully prompted the creation of prior exhibitions including A Never Ending Story, Korean Folk Tales, Three-Ring Circus, DEJAVU, Transformer and Conjuror. This latest series of works titled “MADE IN MONTREAL En considérant le monde différent" will return Juno Youn to his strong artistic style and his ongoing investigation of themes and expressions. Juno’s new series in exhibition represents and recounts a reflection of his time, spent in Montreal, as he can easily see his changing attitudes and moods, from simple happiness to the anxiety derived by new challenges after his recent car accident. Each of these very different emotions and feelings are graphically expressed in Juno’s own language or symbolism. The participants share a moment with each image, as they indulge in the changing narrative within each artistic interpretation. The trace of both Surrealism and Expressionism in Youn’s work would define him as a Trans-Avant-Garde artist.  This series’ artistic language shows signs of homage or tribute to many of the artists’ works that have influenced him over his career. This series has, for Juno, found a common ground that is comforting. The shared space is that of his own artistic expression, mixed with the assortment of influences culminating in a satisfying place of his own. His vision and his voice have found a comfortable place and it feels good.

Juno Youn's work has been collected by: Osler, Hoskin & Hartcourt, Toronto | Mizuma Art Galleries, Tokyo, Japan | Cambridge Art Galleries Canada | Longyear Museum of Colgate University of N.Y, U.S | Westfield State Collage Foundation, Massachusetts, U.S | and many private collections.

Juno Youn was born in Seoul, South Korea, immigrated in mid 80's to Toronto, and currently resides in Montréal Québec.

Bruno Billio has made a name for himself around the city for his interior design works and installation practices. These two aspects of his career tend to co-mingle. Found objects are simplified by vibrant or matte monochromes and held in vitrines or on mirror paneled platforms, stacked up. The show trades heavily on his work at the Gladstone, with a bottle of 'Pure Art' water poured from its taps. It's kind of a Piero Manzoni gag, much like the jeweled anuses that can be found on the yellow rhinos that flank one wall of his show at De Luca Fine Art. It's full of humour and a giddy leaping between notions of scale. But it's the constant production of fake depths thanks to his use of mirrors that really rules the day. The presence of some not-so-luxurious items in spaces with deceptive recessions could have been a joke about the economic situation, conscious or not. Maybe that's why Belinda Stronach seemed a little put off by the whole thing when she brushed by me on her way out.

Stephen Appleby-Barr at Nicholas Metivier from March 10-April 2.

Stephen Appleby-Barr is probably best known as a member of the city's comic art troupe Team Macho. He is now having his first solo show at Nicholas Metivier. Rather than the usual crowd of hipsters I encounter when seeing any work by the Team, the galley seemed to be full of old women with malfunctioning hearing aids. One jokingly said that the strangeness of his paintings was causing it. The paintings in his new show display the odd characters from a personal mythology which have become synonymous with his work. Based mostly on old daguerreotypes, he replaces human heads with animals when he isn't tying masks over the figures' eyes. This time around, the brush work of his oil on linen pieces is more accomplished, the backgrounds richer, full of lustre and a soft textural richness. His scope of references has also expanded with a few surprise dabs of Impressionism here and there. The subtly erotic "The Traditional Pit," a relatively large painting of a group of masked and kilted men stands out.

Ronald Boaks at the Moore Galley from March 12 - April 2, 2011.

I stumbled into a rather nice showing of the abstract paintings of Ronald Boaks at the Moore Gallery. Taken from the last decade or so, they show him working in that vein of abstraction that seems more or less unique to Toronto. Large swaths of paint take precedence at the centre, with big blocks of colour offset by elongated garish blocks to the side. Naked swirls crown the top. While most of the works follow this method, a few break from it with some startling results, relishing in dense waves of delicately articulated waves of paint.

The Berkeley Street Theatre complex was transformed into an Italian salon where audiences can see four groundbreaking Italian contemporary dance and theatre productions, along with a series of free events featuring Italian fashion, music, food and art that will create a festival atmosphere. Between performances, guests can relax over Italian antipasti and a glass of wine in the Berkeley lobby while enjoying live music, contemporary light installations by BRUNO BILLIO and fashions by Versace and Carlucci, with different events taking place each night.

LA NATURA DELLE COSE 
Choreography by Virgilio Sieni, collaboration on dramaturgical writing and translations Giorgio Agamben, with Ramona Caia, Massimiliano Barachini, Jacopo Jenna, Csaba Molnar, Daniele Ninarello.

Inspired by Lucretius’ ancient Roman text On the Nature of the Universe, this compelling dance theatre piece was conceived and choreographed to examine and explore the idea of the origin of things, vacuousness and nothingness.

Mancuso is an artist that transcends cultures and borders making old world new.

This installation consists in a 24-foot black and yellow sculpture and a transformation of the exterior and the interior of the building using The Canadian Stage Company's signature colour “yellow” in the mediums of light and yellow stripes. BRUNO BILLIO has exhibited in Milan, London, Miami, New York and Los Angeles.

De Luca Fine Art | Gallery is currently exhibiting “Stacked = Retrospect” a retrospective of over 15 years of works by BRUNO BILLIO. The show will run from March 10^th to March 31^st, 2011.

The Canadian Stage offers up Italian talent with “Spotlight”Program salutes anniversary of Italy’s unification,
shows by Sieni, Simone and Sagna

La natura delle cose.

The stylistic refinement of Virgilio Sieni, the tragic depth of Spiro Scimone, and the suggestive and the talents of Caterina Sagna, for an in-depth look at Italian contemporary theatre and dance, while also offering a taste of Toronto’s variegated multiculturalism. This is the objective Canadian Stage has set for itself, which from March 15 to 26 will present at Berkeley Street Theatre, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute, “Spotlight on Italy”, an international theatre festival centred completely on Italy, both on and off the stage.
“‘Spotlight’ was conceived to reflect on the artistic and cultural diversity of Toronto,” says Matthew Jocelyn, Artistic and General Director of Canadian Stage. “We’re honoured to bring these artists to Canada – who with their art and talent will contribute to make the festival period unique.” Two weeks during which Berkeley Street Theatre will be completely transformed into an Italian pavilion where the public will not only get first opportunity to watch shows by Sieni, Simone, and Sagna, but also to enjoy a series of satellite events that fully reflect Italianità, from contemporary art and music, to cuisine and fashion.
Between shows in fact, audiences will be able to enjoy a glass of wine and a carefully planned selection of antipasti while strolling through installations by artist BRUNO BILLIO who took care of set-up and lighting.
Among music groups performing will be Domenic Mancuso’s ensemble, – he won a Juno last year – jazz guitarist David Occhipinti, the Antonio Ciacca Trio, best bass-player award-winner Roberto Occhipinti, Michael Occhipinti with his Sicilian Jazz Project, Vesuvius Ensemble with its repertoire of Neapolitan Baroque music, and Marco Calliari from Montreal. The fashion show – another expression of “Made in Italy” – will feature Versace and Carlucci, along with various other events each evening.
Italy is the first country to be highlighted by Canadian Stage, but the theatre company’s idea is to organize a biennial festival that displays the best of contemporary culture from communities that make up the variegated Toronto mosaic.
